WRITING AMBASSADORS INTERNSHIP
Writing
Ambassadors
Writing Ambassadors program is a 2-4 unit
internship course for upper division UCD students who are interested in K-12
education. Writing Ambassadors work with teachers and students in local
classrooms, emphasizing reading and writing in the content areas. Reading- and
Writing-to-learn strategies have become important tools for teachers in all
subject areas, from the obvious ones like social studies and language arts to
the less apparently writing-based disciplines like science, math, and physical
education. Having students write about what they know and want to know helps
them understand and recall concepts and processes in all subjects and at all
levels.

Although being involved in community
outreach programs is encouraged for everyone at UCD, working as a Writing
Ambassador in area schools gives those who want to be teachers --or even think
they might want to-- an opportunity to get hands-on experience. Doing so
may assist you in making a life decision as well as build up volunteer hours
and contacts that will help you get into a credential or other professional
program (great for references and personal statements). In addition you will
learn more about using reading- and writing-to-learn strategies in your field
and polish your own writing skills as you foster those of others. Finally, if
you are taking a composition class at the same time, your instructor may allow
you to use your experiences as material for assignments.

Writing
Ambassador Training
We welcome intern volunteers from all
majors, and you do not have to be an expert writer or teacher of reading and
writing to participate. It is very helpful to have a car, though we try to car
pool when possible.
UWP 197TC
is pass/no pass grading. You can repeat the
course for credit (up to 10 units). We encourage you to work with us for longer
than one quarter, though doing so is not required.
